General eye care for pets

At Village Veterinary Hospital, we provide general eye care as part of our commitment to your pet’s overall health and comfort. Our veterinarians perform routine eye exams and can identify and help manage many common eye conditions seen in dogs and cats.

While we are not ophthalmology specialists, we are equipped to provide general screening, monitoring, and treatment for a range of common eye concerns.

Glaucoma Screening and Monitoring

Glaucoma occurs when the pressure inside the eye increases, which can affect your pet’s vision over time. There are two types: primary glaucoma, which may develop as your pet ages, and secondary glaucoma, which can occur following other eye issues or injuries.

Common signs of glaucoma can include:

  • Redness or irritation

  • Tearing or discharge

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Cloudiness or a change in eye appearance

  • Swelling around the eye

We recommend including a basic eye pressure (intraocular pressure or IOP) screening as part of your pet’s regular wellness exams. This quick and gentle test helps monitor eye health and establish a baseline for your pet’s normal IOP readings, which can vary by breed and individual.

The procedure is simple and noninvasive. To keep your pet comfortable, we apply a mild anesthetic eye drop before testing.

Call us at (515) 278-5531 if you think your pet needs an eye exam.
